FUGLY OR FABULOUS: WALL MURALS

1.20.2012

It’s Friday!  Whew!  What a long. cold. week.  So glad the weekend is here.

I haven’t done ‘Fugly or Fabulous’ for a while, so I was excited to put together this post.  And I have to say, I kind of surprised myself with this one.  I started out on one team, and ended up 100% on the other!

When I think wall murals, I totally picture my Uncle’s house in the late ‘70’s / early ‘80’s.  It had a big crazy wallpaper mural in the family room.  So I set out to find images that reminded me of that.  I don’t remember it exactly, but this one might be close:

*** sidenote – when they got tired of the mural, my uncle and aunt covered it up with a wall of wood installed in a chevron pattern!  So cool!  Wish I had pictures of both! ***

*** another sidenote – it’s the same uncle that let me decorate his house… see it here ***

So, back to the murals.  I kept looking and found more:

So… what do you think?  Fugly or fabulous???  {btw… I think the answer is totally obvious!}

But please comment anyways and tell me what you think!  Would you put one in your home?

  1. i don't like them- i can't make them work for me! even with the cool decor surrounding them i still get lost in the weird mural.

  2. The ones here are bad, oh so bad. There are some friends of my in-laws who invited us to their house warming party and she did a mural on an entry wall that was actually really beautiful. It looked almost like it was painted-however, it's the only well done mural I've ever seen.

  3. I think it's possible to do it well but I would never attempt it. I'll stick with my oh-so-brave feature wall with a darker colour than the other walls:)

  4. 1) My grandma had that exact same mural of all the birch trees behind her bed. :-)
    2) I LOVE the pool mural in the nursery. That looks amazing.

But I'd have to say if you're going to put something on your walls, go for wallpaper and skip a mural.

  5. Years ago - late 70s early 80s like you've said - my Mom put a mural on the wall in our kitchen. First let me say that my Mom had a real eye for decor & colour. She made everything look fantastic! So this mural... it was much like the last one you've shared above: a lovely green forest/tree-scape. Sitting in front of the mural was a small wood table & chairs that were warm wood toned, similar to the cabinets and (get this), she had avocado appliances! But it all looked so good; so pulled together and on trend (for the time)!!! Would I use a wall mural now? I might!! In the end it would depend on how the room was used and the overall look I was trying to achieve :-)

  7. It's not something that I personally like, but I think it has a place in certain homes. Especially if the image is meaningful. Kind of hard to pull off, though.

  8. The last one's kind of cool....not for me though. Our friends have an indoor pool and have a mural of a hawaiian shoreline with real seashells lining the bottom. They've had it since the 70's and I love it because I always thought it was super neat as a little girl.

  9. I don't think I would ever have one in my house, but I think they can look cool when done correctly. I like the last couple of images you have.

  10. I am sorry but it is ugly.....hard to pull off. Some things need to just stay in the 70's!

  11. I think that these are really bad examples, there is a lot of cool wallpaper murals available these days from design firms, particularly in the UK I've found.
