I’ve been living without a table in the center of our living room all winter:
I thought that it would be more functional to have a big open space since the kids play in that room so much. But really… I’m tired of having no where to put my feet up, no where to set my coffee cup, etc. I think we need to figure something out.
I’m torn between two options:

The coffee table is from World Market, and the ottoman is from West Elm (but that fabric is no longer available.)
When I saw the World Market table in Monika Hibb’s feature in Glitter Guide, I instantly loved it. I measured it up, and it would fit perfectly!!! I think it would be great to add a rustic/industrial element to that room. BUT… Jeff reminded me that it might have too many hard edges considering the number of little kids that play here.

On the other hand, I do love the look of an ottoman upholstered in great fabric. Plus, I could probably make one myself, which would be fun. This one is super fabulous… Kristen Bell’s home (featured in In Style magazine.)

I know which option I’m leaning towards. But I’m curious… which would you choose? Cool industrial coffee table? Or ottoman in a fun fabric?
i would go with the coffee table! i think it suits your room perfectly!
ReplyDeleteI would go with the ottoman. Soft edges and comfortable enough to place your feet on. Also, you can place a tray on top and use it as a coffee table.
ReplyDeleteGood point... I love trays on ottomans.
DeleteI LOVE that ottoman!! I think it would play off the curtains nicely!!! And I agree with Seasonedtaste, you can put a fun tray on top of it!! If you have a ton of people over, you can use it for extra seating!!! xoxo elizabeth
ReplyDeleteI'd go for the table. Your room isn't huge and is already full of upholstered pieces. I think the table would break things up a bit. Both are great, though.
ReplyDeleteI know... the table would definitely break up all of the soft upholstered pieces.
DeleteI would go for the ottoman. It'll look fabulous in your space!
ReplyDeleteI love the ottoman. I think the soft edges are perfect for kiddos. Your living room is looking so chic right now, perhaps a funky black and white fabric? I bet you could DIY a similar one to Kristen's pretty easily...
ReplyDeleteI'm terrible at making choices, but if you choose the coffee table make sure you see it in person. I recently fell in love with a coffee table from World Market that I found online but quickly ran the other way when I saw it in the store. The quality just wasn't what I expected from the picture! I think either the table or the ottoman would be lovely, but you already knew that. :)
ReplyDeleteOK... thanks for the input. I would have to order it sight unseen... maybe not such a great idea?
DeleteConsidering you said that you would probably DIY an upholstered ottoman, then I'd say go with that. You can customize not only the fabric but also the size. The West Elm option looks too big for your space. And, since you also mentioned you want a place to put your feet up the upholstered option a more comfortable one!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Tough call - and our own decisions are the most difficult! I say the reclaimed wood coffee table - like the contrast with the upholstered pieces!

Ottomon, because you love diy projects and it can double as seating and my kids won't hurt themselves on it and you can change the fabric if you get bored. However, the coffee table is super-nice and I like how it would add contrast. Whatever you pick will look fab!
ReplyDeleteWhat... you don't want your kids to leave my place with 7 stitches in their head???
DeleteOK, sorry to throw another option at you, but I'm thinking you need a pair of stools to act as an ottoman. I like being able to see some of the rug and walk around. And their are lots of options for stools (even maybe something acrylic). Just another thought! M.
ReplyDeleteYes... I totally like the double stool option! Great idea!
DeleteI actually agree with Mandi too - I was going to say maybe a pair of ottomans that you could put together or move apart and still kid friendly. Target has a lot of great options. And I'm in the same boat - we've been minus a coffee table for maybe a year, and I'm ready to have it back. But our daughter plays in the room all the time so it's nice for her to have a big open space. Can't wait to see what you decide.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna say ottoman because it's on my list of diy projects for my own house and I think we should diy together:)
ReplyDeleteWe should totally diy together!
DeleteI have the same dilemma here, we have an ugly brown ottoman that looks so big and bulky, but its kid friendly so it's staying for awhile. I really want a glass top table, but it doesn't seem practical right now. I like both options you are looking at. I think the WE ottoman is really low to the ground, so you just might want to measure how high in case you were looking for a taller ottoman.
ReplyDeletehaving the same dilema at the moment, ive ditched my rug at the moment so the baby can roam free in his walker but once he is mobile im thinking i want a big mother ottoman like the one you have pictured and i want to trade in my sofas for a big corner sofa that the whole family can cuddle up on! fab post xxx
ReplyDeleteI think either one would look great, but I'm partial to the ottoman. I've got my feet propped up on mine right now! It's nice to be able to do that and to have a little extra seating if you ever need it. We just put a tray there for drinks and to store the remote. Can't wait to see what you decide!
ReplyDeleteThat's a toughie! I tend to think industrial for praticality...it already looks worn! I would worry that an upholstered one would get stains and wear over time. The first new coffe table I ever had....my son carved his name on in big 2 inch letters when he was home sick from school one day! I told him that some day when he has a house of his own, I am going to repay the favour! lol! Wishing you a wonderful week....love your living room! Angie xo
ReplyDeleteI vote cool industrial but the ottoman would be nice too. Hope your kitchen is coming along ok!
ReplyDeleteI have four kids, so I pick the ottomon, preferably one with storage. But if you go for the coffe table, I choose a rustic piece, that way any new dings or dents will just blend in.
